Answer in brief

When should DGF join the project?

Ideally during concept or technical design, before framing is ordered, ceilings are closed and electrical routes are fixed. A plan, indicative dimensions, functional description and intended construction are enough for an initial consultation. Final manufacturing data are approved later.

Starting point

Specify the outcome, not only the phrase “smart glass”.

The phrase “smart glass” does not define technology, power-off state, laminate build-up, dimensions, safety, controls or package responsibility. A sound specification begins with the user scenario and complete-partition requirements.

DGF translates the function into active-area geometry, cable direction, power-supply location and control logic. The glass engineer, framing supplier, electrician and integrator remain responsible for their scopes; coordination must make every interface explicit.

01. Function and default state

Define users, sightlines, privacy events and the required state during power loss. State whether the entire pane or selected zones should frost.

02. Complete partition build-up

Separate the active function from safety, acoustic, thermal, solar-control and resistance requirements. Performance must be confirmed for the complete specified configuration.

03. Geometry and tolerances

Define final size, shape, holes, cut-outs, pane orientation, active area and inactive border. Manufacture starts only after approval.

04. Frame, edge and contact materials

Verify rebate depth, support, tolerances, drainage where relevant, sealant compatibility and concealment of the connection without compression.

05. Power and controls

Define an accessible power-supply location, cable route, circuit zoning, local controls and any integration signals. Electrical installation remains the responsibility of the qualified trade.

06. Handover, instructions and service

Require testing of both states, circuit labelling, cleaning guidance and identification of components accessible for diagnosis without dismantling finished interiors.

FAQ

Questions worth resolving before a decision.

What should be sent for an initial consultation?

Send a plan and section, indicative dimensions, visualisation or photo, intended frame construction and privacy scenario. If electrical services are already being designed, include the diagram or possible power-supply location.

Can one standard glass thickness be specified?

Not for every application. Build-up depends on format, support, loads, safety, installation and the other requirements of the complete partition. The active function does not replace engineering or correct glazing selection.

Can DGF work with the selected framing system?

Feasibility is confirmed after reviewing the section, space for glass and connection, tolerances and installation method. The system supplier or contractor should participate in detail approval.

Who carries out the electrical installation?

The scope is agreed per project, but connection to building services, protection and compliance with site requirements belong to the appropriately qualified electrical trade. DGF provides the data needed to coordinate the glass system.
