The question “will anything be visible?” has no single answer without context. A large hotel bathroom with soft light behaves differently from a consulting room with a luminaire behind the chair or a meeting room with a bright display close to the glass.
A sound assessment does not make an absolute promise. It identifies sightlines, critical light sources and distances, then checks both states. Glass, luminaires and furniture can then be positioned deliberately.
1. Visual privacy does not mean complete opacity
In the frosted state PDLC scatters light and removes a clear image. At close range and high contrast, a broad outline, movement or shadow may remain visible. This is not a hidden defect but a technology characteristic to design around.
Required discretion depends on what must be concealed. A business meeting, bathroom and medical room have different needs. In sensitive applications, the project team should define the acceptable result and confirm it on a sample or mock-up.
2. Lighting contrast matters more than the time of day
At night, a corridor or bedroom may be dark while a bathroom is very bright. A person near a strong luminaire then creates a clearer shadow on the frosted surface. Reducing contrast, moving the light or changing its direction may improve the result more than any marketing promise.
During the day, a window behind a user or direct sun can create the same issue. Assessment therefore covers season, orientation, luminaires, bright displays and reflective surfaces—not only the clock.

3. Bathrooms, offices and consulting rooms need different tests
In a bathroom, test a person by the shower, bath and basin, mirror lighting and the view from bed or living area. In an office, assess corridors, seats, display and movement. A medical room adds patient position, staff procedures and required discretion.
If the critical view covers only part of the partition, DGF Segment can screen a defined band. The pane should not be made complex without need. The simplest layout that performs the function is easier to operate, document and service.
4. How to perform an honest pre-production test
First mark observer and subject positions on the plan. Record day and evening conditions, switch on intended luminaires and position furniture. Assess the sample in both states at the correct angle and distance, not only by holding it against a window.
For a larger project, prepare a mock-up or test one room. The acceptance criterion can describe the real scenario: details or display content cannot be recognised from a defined position. It should not promise physical opacity that PDLC does not provide.
5. An absolute requirement may need a second solution
If no shadow, movement or light source may be visible, a frosted pane alone may not be the right tool. Depending on the space, a solid partition, additional screen or another designer-approved solution should be considered.
DGF helps define actual glass behaviour but does not replace building functional requirements. Honest qualification is better than installing striking technology where it cannot meet the essential need.
